Cleveland Clinic General Surgery Residency Program

How would you describe the culture of your residency?

Our residency is clinically and academically rigorous, and we are also a very close-knit group. We strive for inclusion clinically, professionally and personally. In our program, all voices and opinions are heard and embraced and we thrive on a culture of respect and professionalism. Our mission is to provide world-class surgical training for the next generation of surgeons and surgeon leaders.

How has your program supported resident wellness?

We currently have an associate program director whose focus is on wellness. Through a resident wellness committee, we enthusiastically create and change policy and execute projects and initiatives the residents feel will optimally support and enhance their wellness. We also offer dedicated non-clinical time each month for the sole purpose of resident wellness. In addition, our enterprise has exhaustive wellness resources which are available to our residents.

How has your program supported diversity, inclusion, and equity (DEI) either at your institution or in the surrounding community?

Our program and department has a dedicated group of residents and leaders whose focus is to enhance Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Through this and other programs we are able to ensure supported development of our residents and faculty that identify as Underrepresented in Medicine and Surgery. Several other programs include partnering with students and members of our local communities to enhance their education, expose them to medicine and health care related fields, expand the pipeline, offer jobs and support development. Also critically important to our program is uncovering and eliminating disparities in healthcare through research and education.

What are unique features of your program that you would like to highlight?
