How would you describe the culture of your residency?
The Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Internal Medicine Residency's mission is to develop and maintain a well-rounded internal medicine program committed to teaching the art and science of medicine through structured cognitive and procedural clinical education in both inpatient and outpatient settings. We strive to be the health care providers of choice in the communities we serve by continuously improving our delivery of health services as part of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. We encourage personal behaviors that exemplify the values of clinical excellence, a safe environment for all, ethics and integrity, individual responsibility, respect for diversity, and caring for others. Our program’s aim is to continue to provide a strong osteopathic learning environment and foster a culture of personal and professional growth, develops skills to critically evaluate and implement evidence-based medicine, and have excellent clinical experiences.
How has your program supported resident wellness?
Well-being and work-life balance is a priority for the program, particularly during the pandemic. Wellness is supported through quarterly wellness and teambuilding events. Mini wellness activities are also scheduled throughout the year to ensure resident well-being remains high. Additionally, each trainee is provided four hours per month for personal needs. The program continues to work to enhance future wellness experiences with different speakers and topics on work-life balance. The South Pointe Hospital also offers the residents an on-campus employee fitness gym, an outdoor park, and Pointe of Relaxation rooms with massage chairs, foot massagers, yoga mats, and sound machines to encourage renewal. In addition to the wellness resources offered by Cleveland Clinic main campus, trainees also receive monthly updates from the SPH wellness coordinator regarding all wellness resources available to caregivers.
How has your program supported diversity, inclusion, and equity (DEI) either at your institution or in the surrounding community?
Our program is committed to diversity and inclusion. We provide equal opportunity across all employment practices including recruitment, selection, training, promotion, transfer, and compensation, without regard to age, gender, race, national origin, religion, creed, color, citizenship status, physical or mental disability, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, genetic information, ethnicity, ancestry, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law (“protected categories”). The faculty and resident teams are involved in all aspects of the recruitment process. Applications are reviewed, candidates are selected for an interview, and the team participates in discussions regarding ranking. The program is diligent in candidate selection and the focus has been to select applicants that best fit the program as a whole by filtering applications based on leadership experience, extracurricular activities, and culturally diverse backgrounds.
What are unique features of your program that you would like to highlight?
Unique features of our program include the community-based training environment, the diverse under-served patient population we care for, the well-developed faculty-trainee relationships, and the numerous sub-specialty rotation and research opportunities within the Cleveland Clinic Health System. The small size of the program also allows for great hands-on and mentoring experiences.
