How would you describe the culture of your residency?
The UCLA Neurology Residency program is dedicated to training future leaders in our field. Our department is consistently ranked among the top academic Neurology departments in the country, availing our residents of innumerable opportunities to pursue a wide range of research, patient care, advocacy & education efforts to launch a successful career. Our residents play an integral role in shaping our program, and they stand out as THE best part of the UCLA program. Their camaraderie, mutual love of neurology, integrity, dedication to excellence, and support for each other engenders a culture of happiness and success at all levels of training.
How has your program supported resident wellness?
We promote a culture of wellness within the institution and our department, including system-level initiatives (4+2 block schedule; fatigue mitigation ride program) as well as built-in opportunities for self-reflection, creativity, and social engagement to develop lifelong skills in supporting one's well-being. In addition, we have developed a peer-support network of resident “families”, where residents from each year of training benefit from each other’s advice and encouragement.
How has your program supported diversity, inclusion, and equity (DEI) either at your institution or in the surrounding community?
We are committed to values of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in all that we do. Our Diversity in Training Scholarship Program provides a fully supported elective to U.S. medical students who are from traditionally underrepresented groups in medicine. In the residency application process, we employ a holistic review process, taking into account each person's experience, accomplishments, and motivation for pursuing a career in Neurology. UCLA is situated within the incredibly diverse community of Los Angeles, CA where our residents have the opportunity to train at a variety of clinical sites (University, VA, and County hospitals). In addition, our residents participate in a longitudinal health equity curriculum, and have the opportunity for additional engagement through the EDI/Advocacy special interest track.
What are unique features of your program that you would like to highlight?
A great advantage of the UCLA Neurology residency program is the broad and deep education in clinical neurology afforded by the diversity of training sites and large faculty size. This provides the foundation for our special interest tracks (Research, Education, EDI/Advocacy, and Global Neurology) so residents can craft their own career direction---the opportunity to “choose your own adventure”.
Our residents enjoy amazing benefits as part of the housestaff union, including a generous housing stipend. Life in LA has something for everyone - Los Angeles is a thriving and vibrant city with many cultures, diverse neighborhoods, endless activities, all types of food, and sunny SoCal weather.
Is there any advice that you would like to share with the LMSA community?
Prioritize your health & well-being, and enjoy your remaining medical school electives. During interviews, share your story…your path to neurology and your genuine enthusiasm for the field. You will find that this will bring out common bonds and shared experiences and interests and will help you find ‘your people’, your Neurology Residency home. We can't wait to meet you, and show you all that the UCLA Neurology Residency program has to offer!
