La Serranía de Hornocol in Jujuy, Argentina, is a breathtaking, out-of-this world, limestone mountain range, scraping the sky at 4761 meters. I beheld it during a 10-week pasantía spent working at a medical clinic outside of Córdoba, far away from my current Michigan residence. At the vista point, an Argentine flag was flying proudly, and I felt a rush of respect and awe for the natural beauty of this country in which I was but a guest. Simultaneously, I felt pride in our commonalities. After months of immersing myself in their culture, struggling with their castellano, and embracing their community, we had shared life. A Latina whose heritage is that of Mexican immigrants, we shared a Latin American culture. The daughter of an adventurous mamá who spent 7 years working in Buenos Aires, we shared generational memories. And a child of the Sierra Nevadas, we shared a kinship with the landscape. This summer, I had the privilege of letting Argentina deepen my appreciation for both the variety and unity of our Madre Tierra, to which we each belong.
