Ethnic and Racial Diversity Among Surgeon and Non- Surgeon Deans of Allopathic Medical Schools

About the Author:

My name is Alejandro Chiodo Ortiz and I am currently an M3 at Albany Medical College. I am primarily from Philadelphia, but have spent time living in Miami, LA, San Antonio, Ohio and New York and I am of Colombian heritage. I have served as my chapter's community service chair, LMSA Northeast Mentorship Chair and am currently the LMSA National Mentorship Co-Chair. My biggest passion is improving representation in medicine and serving the most vulnerable members of my community.

About the Work:

There has been a concerted effort to improve diversity in medicine. However, a deficiency of diversity in leadership positions persists. The medical school dean is an essential member of the medical community. We evaluated racial and gender demographics among medical school deans in the United States. Specifically, we qualified and compared the representation of women and underrepresented minority surgeon vs non-surgeon deans.
