Lessons from a Flower Field

Stephanie Jackson, MS1

Moments in life, moments to embrace.

Time slipping through the soil like a drought’s desperate haste.

Take a second to soak in,

feel,

trace.

Follow the roots and the path they pave.

For you may just learn

a drop,

a sprinkle,

or a shower of mother nature’s impeccable grace.

As when skies turn dark and shadows linger,

keep optimistic like the sunflower,

not your average over-thinker.

Chase the sun.

Find your light.

No matter what, keep that head held high.

You weren’t made to wilt,

Never to wither.

You are so much more than the first glance of beauty you often deliver.

Be relentless like a wildflower.

Be passionate.

Be bold.

Remember dear, no wind or mighty force can take the power that you hold.

Protect your petals.

Sharpen your thorns.

Your purpose in life blooms past décor.

Never permit a vase to stunt your growth.

Always return to that flower field you once called home.

About the Author:

My name is Stephanie Jackson, and I am an OMS-1 at A.T. Still University in Arizona. I am Mexican American, and I thank my mom every day for teaching me Spanish and showing me the beauty of our Hispanic culture. When I am not stressing about exams, I enjoy exercising at the gym, writing poems, drawing, painting, and singing. Hope you enjoy my work!

About the Work:

This poem is about how time quickly passes and how it can become overwhelming and stressful trying to keep up. It’s easy to get lost in the chaos and forget about all the accomplishments we have achieved along the way. At these moments in life, we just need to return to our roots, and become grounded again so we may be reminded of how amazing we truly are.

I titled this piece, “Lessons from a Flower Field” because I imagined a peaceful field moving with a gentle breeze which contrasts the busy lives most of us have. Furthermore, lots of people mistake flowers as fragile and pretty to look at, but quick to die. However, I believe that there’s so much more to them that we can learn and benefit from.
