Our Story

Anais Iglesias, MD/MPH, MS4 on Master's Year

Oh, to be an immigrant

A permanent state of duality

Facing uncertainty, stepping into the unknown

Still with high spirits and a heart full of hope

Oh, to be an immigrant

Leaving behind the familiar

Waving goodbye with a smile

Tears growing, this is no longer your home

Oh, to be an immigrant

By water, air, or land

Led by the stars in the sky

And visions of a dignified life

Oh, to be an immigrant

We’ve made it!

The lights of the city illuminate the night

In all its glory, to your new home you’ve arrived

Oh, to be an immigrant

Blood, sweat, and tears

The ink that writes our history

I pray for my people, may you too come home

About the Author:

My name is Anais Iglesias, I am currently a fourth-year medical student pursuing my MD/MPH combined degree. From a young age, I heard stories of my family’s journey fleeting Cuba to living in Venezuela. I was born and raised there, not truly understanding what it meant to leave everything behind. At the age of 11, my family made the arduous decision to move countries once again in hopes to give me and my siblings freedom, safety, and better opportunities. This sacrifice has meant everything to me and has largely shaped my love for public health and medicine. As I continue with my career journey, I hope to work with underserved populations, with a special focus on children of immigrant families.

About the Work:

This poem relates to my family's journey, and that of all immigrants, who were forced to leave their home countries behind in search of freedom and stability. As a South Florida resident, I live in a community rich in cultural diversity, with residents from all parts of the world and walks of life. This poem is a reminder to celebrate the hope and opportunities this country has given us, and to continue sharing our hardships and triumphs as immigrants: our stories.
