Alejandro Flores

Alejandro Flores is a second-year medical student at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM), deeply committed to bridging gaps in healthcare for underserved communities. His journey toward medicine was inspired by a formative experience in an emergency department, where he witnessed the power of compassionate care as Dr. Franco, the only Spanish speaking Doctor, calmed an elderly Latina patient in excruciating pain. This moment ignited his passion for addressing healthcare disparities, particularly for Spanish-speaking patients and underserved populations.

Before entering medical school, Alejandro worked in a mobile free clinic and conducted clinical research in the ICU, where he saw firsthand the stark healthcare inequalities exacerbated by language and cultural barriers. His experience caring for a critically ill Spanish-speaking patient during the pandemic solidified his commitment to ensuring that Hispanic and other underserved communities receive not only the care they need but also feel seen, heard, and understood.

Alejandro’s dedication to health equity and cultural competence fuels his drive to pursue a career where he can tackle the root causes of health disparities. With a focus on bridging language, culture, and empathy, Alejandro aims to become a physician who is not only a skilled practitioner but also a trusted advocate for vulnerable communities, ensuring that all patients receive compassionate, equitable care"
