In this set of three black-and-white photographs, I sought to capture more than just moments—I wanted to preserve the unspoken stories of the people of La Romana, the quiet strength in their eyes, and the joy they cultivate despite the weight of their reality. Taken during my 2023 medical mission trip, these images are a window into the lives of those living in the Bateys, where sugar cane fields stretch endlessly and define the rhythms of existence.

The first image freezes a child's gaze—curious, hopeful, and wise beyond their years. Their expression is a reflection of both innocence and an understanding of life’s hardships. In the second, a group of children share a moment of laughter, a reminder that even in scarcity, happiness is abundant. The third photograph pulls the viewer into the vast, endless stretch of the sugar cane fields—a place where time seems to stand still under the weight of the sun. The towering stalks rise in every direction, their sharp edges swaying gently in the wind, whispering stories of labor and resilience. The horizon is hazy, blending earth and sky in a seamless expanse, as if the fields go on forever.

I chose to keep these images in black and white, stripping away distraction to reveal the stark contrast between the beauty of the people and the harsh reality of their struggles. This experience reshaped my perspective on medicine, reinforcing my commitment to serving communities where care is often a luxury rather than a right. Through these snapshots, I hope to share a perspective—one that honors resilience, humanity, and the spirit of those who find light even in the shadows.
