Honoring Hispanic Heritage: Support Hispanic Medical Students and Residents

Our article examines the current challenges in increasing Hispanic representation in medicine, with a particular focus on the pipeline from medical school to residency, and should be in favor of increasing diversity in medicine. We aim to highlight the barriers that Hispanic students and residents face and to provide actionable insights for the medical community to better support these individuals.

Our discussion emphasizes the persistent underrepresentation of Hispanic students in medical schools and the compounded challenges they face during residency. We also discuss the shortage of Hispanic residents in key specialties like internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatrics, which has significant implications for patient care in Hispanic communities. Additionally, our manuscript explores the initiatives that have shown promise in addressing these issues, such as the work of the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and the impact of statewide efforts like California’s Latino Physician Day.

Our perspective contributes valuable insights to the ongoing discourse on diversity in medicine and aligns with the mission of the New England Journal of Medicine. It offers guidance for educators, administrators, and policymakers on fostering a more inclusive medical community that better reflects the diverse population it serves.
