Tania Peña Ortiz

Tania Peña Ortiz is a first-generation medical student at Weill Cornell Medicine. Born in the Dominican Republic, Tania migrated with her family to Washington Heights-Inwood, New York, at the age of seven. Growing up in a neighborhood where Spanish was the predominant language, Tania was surrounded by hardworking individuals and a cultural vibrancy that became a home away from home. This tight-knit community, rooted in its shared experiences, offered a sense of belonging, but it was also one that faced significant challenges. Growing up, Tania witnessed firsthand how the social determinants of health — from limited access to healthcare to socioeconomic barriers — affected the well-being of her family and neighbors. These challenges fueled Tania’s desire to pursue a career in medicine, aiming to use it as a platform to not only heal but also to advocate for communities like hers, and help address the disparities she encountered growing up.
