About the program

Mission

The Emory Emergency Medicine (EM) Residency Program actively works to recruit, develop, and train the next generation of diverse Emergency Medicine leaders with the skills and expertise to provide outstanding patient care, engage in cutting edge research, seek opportunities for service and advocacy, and invest in personal and professional wellness and resiliency techniques.

Our Faculty and Residents

6%

Faculty members that identify as Latinx

22%

Faculty members that identify as BIPOC

33%

Of our residents identify as BIPOC

We have several support systems in place to make sure all of our residents thrive while they are here.  Each incoming resident is paired with an individual resident and faculty member who are their guides and advocates throughout their time in the program.  The Emory EM Diversity and Inclusion Committee (EDIC) serves as a hub for mentorship, service, and advocacy activities in the department.  Through EDIC, we have several groups set up for informal mentorship and community, including for those identifying as coming from URM backgrounds as well as for women in medicine.  Similar communities also exist across Emory at the GME level.

We offer opportunities to do a track in Research, as well as research opportunities outside of a formalized track. There are also opportunities to pursue a certificate in SDOH, Health Policy, or Health Equity.

Patient Population

As a safety net hospital, Grady cares for all Atlantans, including a high percentage of uninsured and underinsured patients.  Many of our patients identify as BIPOC and include refugee and immigrant populations.  The residents receive training in caring for non-English speaking patients, including appropriate and compassionate use of medical interpreters.

The MUSE program exists to provide longitudinal mentorship and a sponsored visiting EM clerkship to students interest in EM who come from URM backgrounds.   See more information here:
