Urology Match

Students applying to urology must register for the Urology Match through the American Urologic Association (AUA). Registration requires a non-refundable fee (2024 registration cost $75). Most U.S. urology programs will receive your application material via Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), but check with each program of interest. Fortunately, the AUA offers a clear schedule and instructions. During the 2024 cycle, students could register for the Urology Match between June 23-December 29, 2023. Between September 1-15, 2023, students could submit signal preferences via the AUA—this effectively tells programs, “I’m very interested in interviewing at your institution.” Applicants could submit signals to 30 programs. Programs were notified of signals on September 28, 2023.

The most unique aspect of the Urology Match is that all interview offers are sent on one day—interview invitations were emailed to applicants on October 27, 2023. Within three days, by October 30, applicants had to accept or reject all interview offers. “Flush Day” is also unique to the Urology Match—on October 31, students were offered interviews from waitlists, and they could contact programs to decline previously accepted interviews in place of new interview offers. After interviewing at programs, applicants must submit their preference lists (i.e., rank lists). This was due January 9, 2024. The excitement culminates in early February on Match Day! Unlike the Main Residency Match, there is no period between finding out if you matched and where you matched. This year, all urology applicants found out if and where they matched into urology residency on February 1, 2024. In 2024, 500 medical students registered for the Urology Residency Match, and 385 (77%) matched. Urology is a competitive program, so start planning as early as your first and second years of medical school to ensure a successful match!
