Military Match

During their third year of medical school, some students will join military scholarships or programs, such as the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) or the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). These students will participate in the Military Match via the Joint Service Graduate Medical Education Selection Board (JSGMESB). Unlike the NRMP, there is no application cost. JSGMESB registration opens at the beginning of July, and interviews are offered and conducted between July and October. By the middle of October, all application materials, including rank lists, must be submitted. The JSGMESB does not use the same matching algorithm as the Main Residency Match; instead, they review applications manually and attempt to guarantee that each student will have a residency spot, although it may not be in the applicant’s first choice of specialty or military branch. Applicants are notified if and where they match by the middle of December. Each military branch has specific requirements and recommendations, so be sure to check with advisors to ensure best practices for applying and interviewing.
